Managing both Process and Control Engineering. Projects include : - continued development of energy analysis tools for design and management. - investigation into air conditioning of concrete sugar silos, uprating of systems. - development of Plate Evaporator technology in co-operation with Sudzucker - feasibility study of gas turbine CHP scheme for starch / glucose plant. - negotiation of waste water discharge consents, procurement of effluent plant. - presentation of papers on energy efficiency in Poland and Czech Republic - evaluation of ion exchange process for liquid sugar from raw cane sugar (USA) - expansion of factory to 16,000 tpd beet (290,000 tonnes per year sugar) 6/88 to 6/89 Senior Engineer (Process Development), Central Offices. Responsible for department of 5 engineers providing technical support to UK beet sugar factories. - introduced Continuous Vacuum Crystalliser technology from France. - developed on-line method for determining heat load on vacuum condensers. - initiated development of cooling crystalliser systems for full pan seeding. - established an "Energy Manager" at each factory and provided training to them. - use of Magnesium Oxide for pH control and extraction improvement - redesign of vertical crystallisers for better residence time distribution & cooling. 9/86 to 6/88 Process Engineer, Central Offices. Projects include : - designed first BS 6 effect falling film evaporator system for minimum energy. - wrote software tools for Energy Management, used in factories and centrally. - ran "Process Technology" courses for shift managers from BS & Irish Sugar. - undertook process design for modernisation of beet factory to 6000 tpd. - introduced first direct contact heat recovery system for carbonatation gases. - built on-line heat transfer coefficient calculation system for Energy Management - developed control systems for central control of new plant. - energy analysis and design of systems to operate below 25% steam on beet. - improvements to crystallisation operations to reduce molasses purity below 60. - provided on-site Energy Management service to 4 beet factories. 3/85 to 9/86 Shift Manager, Newark Factory. Responsible for shift operation of 7000 tpd beet factory, leading a 50 man shift team, and for Energy Management of site. Also responsible for maintenance activities in beet end of factory during off season. Managed various capital projects, including installation of new thin juice preheaters and a redesign of incondensable gas systems to reduce energy consumption.. During thick juice refining operations performed energy balances and water balances to improve efficiency, also gained working knowledge of automatic vacuum pan control system. 9/82 to 3/85 Production Trainee, Brigg & Ipswich Factories.
