I was born in Cumbria and brought up on a hill farm in the English Lake District.
I graduated from Sheffield University in 1982 with an honours degree in Chemical Engineering
and Fuel Technology.
After graduating I joined British Sugar plc working at 4 sites in several different roles until leaving them in early 1996.
Initially I worked in production, as a trainee and subsequently Shift Manager on a 7000 tpd beet processing factory making around 800 tonnes per day of white sugar. Later I moved into engineering at the head office and subsequently became manager of the Process & Control Engineering Department, with responsibilities including managing the GBP30m capital investment programme.
My areas of expertise include evaporation, compact heat exchangers, sugar conditioning and crystallisation. The beet sugar industry in Europe has achieved high levels of energy efficiency and low factory production costs, I make my living by selling these technologies and methods around the world.
